Dogwood 52 Photo Challenge:
Make us feel the love in this week's photo. Tell a love story in one image.
I met Juliet in September 2007. It truly was love at first listen -- she’s British. It was a whirlwind romance and we got engaged on New Year’s Eve 2007. We started planning our wedding and rented out a vintage yacht in Marina del Rey. (We were living in Los Angeles at that time.)
Then, Prop 8 passed. We were so heart broken. We could no longer be legally wed. Our friends and family had already booked airfare and hotels so we went through with the ceremony.
We moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico the next year. In 2014 the state government allowed GBLT marriage -- a year before it was legal across the country! We instantly got married in a friend’s garden. Just in case they changed their mind – again.
Two months later, I was diagnosed with brain cancer. It was aggressive and I couldn’t make my own decisions. But that little piece of paper saved us from heartache and lengthy legal fights.
Thank you to the straight allies that fought with us. Love is Love. ❤️
ps. We now live in the Boston area for better medical care and I’m in remission. I had to relearn everything from feeding myself, walking, reading, talking, everything, including how to use a camera.
